It’s a new year, a new flat, and most importantly, a new chalkboard, so I thought I’d kick things off right with a chalk homage to my favorite film so far of 2016, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. I’m not a massive Star Wars fan – prefer the Trek to the Wars, if you know what I mean – but was won over by this film. Coming on the coattails of Mad Max: Fury Road, it seems Hollywood has finally learned how easy it is to make Zoë happy with kickass female protagonists.
I had somehow managed to avoid any spoilers in the two weeks between the film’s release and my eventual visit to the cinema, so I was just tickled pink when Rey appeared on screen. There was a lot of gleeful giggling and excited handwaving coming from my direction throughout the film. I agree with all the criticisms about the film’s lack of originality and playing-it-safe approach, but that doesn’t make me any less excited about following Rey’s adventures in the upcoming episodes.
