Arrival struck me as utterly original – in terms of its visuals, its cinematography, its sound design, and its conception of extraterrestrial life.
So many sci-fi films look exactly the same, still recycling Blade Runner’s tech-noir aesthetic 35 years later, so it’s refreshing to see a film team really go back to the drawing board and start from scratch with a new vision. I’m sorry their creativity went relatively unrewarded at the Oscars. Their award for Best Sound Editing was well deserved, but I would’ve liked to see them also take home Best Cinematography and Best Production Design.
And course, I loved the idea that the fate of the world depends on a female academic.
